FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about the touch screens that we offer. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions that are not addressed here.

What PC systems will your touch screen system work with?

We have touch screen solutions available to work with most common operating systems, including Windows 98 / NT / 2000 / XP / Vista/ 7, MAC, and Linux. Third party software is also available for some products to allow our touch screen systems to work with operating systems we don't directly support.

How does the touch screen interface with my PC?

Our touch screen solutions generally interface to the PC via a USB type connection or a serial port (RS-232) connection.

Does a touch screen require special software to operate?

Our touchscreen solutions are supplied with software drivers that allow the touch screen to emulate a mouse in Windows. Because the touch screen emulates a mouse, touching the screen is the same as clicking your mouse at the same point on the screen. This allows the touch screen to work with a vast amount of pre-existing mouse driven software. This also allows for simple development of new applications, because no additional code or knowledge is required to develop software for use with the touch screen. New touch screen applications can be developed in the same way as mouse driven software.

What does the driver software do?

It ensures the PC finds and recognizes the touch screen, in the same way as any other input device such as a mouse or keyboard. It also allows you to calibrate the touch screen and perform basic diagnostics. In addition, the user can customise functions such as right-click enable and fine tune settings for clicking and dragging.

What mouse functions does the touch screen emulate?

The touchscreen is an input device like a mouse, and it emulates basic mouse functions. The touch screen can emulate left-clicks, double-clicking, and dragging. When the screen is touched, it is the same as if you used your mouse to move the pointer to that spot, and then clicked your mouse button. Right-clicking can be done with additional software.

Do I have to use my finger or can I use another pointing device with a touch screen?

This depends on the type of touch screen. Resistive touch screens are pressure sensitive and will work with any type of input; finger, gloved hand, stylus, pen, or any pointing device. Capacitive screens on the other hand will only work with finger input. SW (surface wave) touch screens will work with finger input or soft-tipped stylus input. With SW technology, a hard tipped pen will not create a touch response, but a soft-tip stylus will work. Optical Imaging will work with any stylus.

Can the touch screen respond to two touches / two fingers at the same time?

This will depend on the touchscreen technology you are using. Currently we only support this with our optical imaging solution. To use two touches the application software also needs to support this.

Will the touch screen work if I'm wearing gloves?

This depends on the technology used. For instance, Resistive technology works with a gloved hand while Capacitive won't.

How do I "calibrate" the touch screen?

Typically, after installing the software driver on your computer you will need to "calibrate" the touchscreen. A target is displayed in each corner of the screen, each of which you will be required to touch in turn to tell the driver the extent of the screen. These settings then need to be saved and that's it!

Are there special concerns when designing touch screen software application?

When designing a touch screen application, remember your finger is larger than a mouse pointer. Design your buttons large enough and spaced apart enough for a finger to touch easily. It is also a good idea to include a graphical or audio response to each touch. This will indicate to the user his/her touch was accepted and will not leave the user confused. For simplicity, it is best not to use dragging, double-clicks, scroll bars, drop-down menus or multiple windows. This will make it as easy as possible for the user. Limit choices to your customer and try to offer as much on-screen assistance as possible. Bright backgrounds will hide fingerprints more than a black background would.

What is a touch controller?

The touch controller converts the electronic signal sent from the touch sensor and sends this information, as an X/Y position, to the host PC through a serial or USB port.

What can I use to clean the touch screen?

Any standard glass cleaner (non-ammonia based) can be used to clean the touch screen. Always spray the glass cleaner on the cloth or towel and then clean the touchscreen.
