Robin Hood Improves Productivity and Reduces Cost with DisplayLite Touch Screens

LATEST CASE STUDY

Based in Jersey, Channel Islands, the Robin Hood Group typically produces up to 700 takeaway meals on a busy day and up to 1,200 a day during a peak period. Specialising in Indian, Chinese, Pizzas and traditional Fish and Chips, they are the largest one stop, takeaway and food delivery service on the Island.

By using five DisplayLite 15” LCD custom made touch screens, the Robin Hood has been able to improve productivity and reduce cost.

When Lee Monamy, joined the Robin Hood as IT Manager in 2001, it had already invested in an “off the shelf” order processing system. However, it became clear that this wasn’t capable of meeting the needs of the rapidly expanding business, so Monamy was tasked with developing a custom solution.

Barry Thirkell, Managing Director of the Robin Hood Group explains “First we set about encouraging our customers to order meals using unique code numbers allocated to each meal on our menus. When a customer calls, their details appear on the screen and the order taker can then enter the code numbers quickly into the system".

Once the customer’s order is entered, it is flagged on the DisplayLite 15” touch screen’s installed in the kitchens. Using the specially sealed touch screens, the kitchen staff can acknowledge the order by pressing a button on the touch screen, indicating that the meal is being prepared.

When the meal is cooked and ready for dispatch/collection its status is updated via the touch screen to indicate that the order is complete. This makes the system simple and easy to use. An invoice is then automatically printed for the customer and the order is ready for collection/dispatch. This system saves the business approximately £20,000 per annum in printed paper as well as reducing waste.

Lee Monamy is particularly pleased with the DisplayLite touch screens. “We contacted touch screen specialist DisplayLite as we needed a product that would stand up to the rigors and hazards of a busy commercial kitchen environment including grease, oil, water, steam, heat and rough handling. It also had to be capable of being regularly cleaned and work with gloved hands”.

Simon Perry, Marketing Director, says “Based on the brief from Lee, using AutoCAD, we designed a rugged custom stainless steel enclosure which would meet the sealing requirements of IP65*”.

DisplayLite used a wide viewing angle, 15” TFT LCD smart panel combined with an Elo TouchSystems, 5 wire AccuTouch resistive touch screen. All external I/O connectors and monitor switches also had to meet IP65. The stainless steel enclosure was laser cut, folded, welded, cleaned and finished with a horizontal grain.

May 2011: The DisplayLite touch screen units have been installed for over 9 years in the Robin Hood Kitchens and are still working and performing as well as they did when they were first installed. The Robin Hood is set to launch an online ordering system later this year.
